I always felt so inadequate. I ended up settling in relationships. I wanted a man who would share my faith and be a strong spiritual leader, a man who would adore and cherish me. When he proposed I thought he was the one, but it didn't take long for the misery to begin.
I believed everything my ex-husband said. Even though there was no evidence of change, I clung to hope. And yet, time and time again, I was disappointed. Frustrated. Enraged. Embittered.
I tried everything to make him change. I prayed harder. Joined Bible studies to help my marriage. I tried counseling and read books.
But the lying and deceit didn't stop. The emotional, spiritual and financial abuse continued. His drug addiction and porn addiction grew out of control.
It wasn't until years later that I found the word to define what I'd experienced. Narcissistic abuse.
Eyes wide open came a little late. So many red flags I'd ignored. So many things I wish I'd known earlier.
The truth is, that I'd always picked the wrong men. I settled and compromised my values. Bottom line: I felt inadequate. Unworthy of what I really wanted. So I settled for someone I thought I could fix.
But those were the very qualities that made me vulnerable to controlling, manipulative, emotionally abusive and narcissistic men.
Add to that my misinterpretation of scripture that that the only reason for divorce was marital infidelity. Instead I was taught to love more. Pray harder. Suffer long. Endure. Suck it up.
My children were growing up with the same mindsets I'd embraced. I knew I needed answers, but I was also concerned about their future as well. I had to find freedom.
It all started when I finally had enough. Filed a Victim’s Protective Order. Now that my husband was out of the house, I thought everything would be better. But that’s when I discovered that I didn’t know how to be alone. I’d never been alone before.
Yep, it was scary. But rock bottom is exactly where I really found Jesus.

About Christy Johnson
Christy Johnson is a soul-health coach, relationship expert, international speaker and author.
